Dengue: A Looming Threat We Must Take Seriously
Dengue, a viral infection transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is a source of growing concern. Unlike malaria, these mosquitoes bite during the day, primarily after sunrise and before sunset. The dengue virus exists in four distinct types (Den1-4), and infection with one type doesn't confer immunity to the others. In fact, subsequent dengue infections can be more severe.
As a healthcare provider, I share the fear of contracting this illness every year. The stark reality is that there's no specific treatment for dengue, only vigilant supportive care can help. It's especially devastating for the very young and the elderly.
Prevention is the key: use mosquito repellent and mosquito net, wear long sleeves and pants, and eliminate breeding sites around your home. Dengue is a real threat that requires our collective attention and responsible actions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. Don't underestimate it; let's stay vigilant and informed.
