Removed most difficult Foreign Body yesterday from a 9 months old child. A 9 months old child was presented as a case of Respiratory Distress. X-ray chest suggested pneumothorax that caused collapse of lung. There was a history of sudden deterioration. So, I did chest drain but the lung remained collapsed. Therefore, I had to do Bronchoscopy in which very large foreign body was found in the lung. The family had no clue that the child may have a foreign body. They kept telling that the child only took some bites of chapatti. But the fact was, the child somehow grabbed some PEARL MILLETS and put them in his mouth which went into the respiratory tract and caused collapsed lung. Pearl Millets were not visible in the X-Ray because X-Rays passes through some organic substances. It was really very difficult and tricky to remove them from the lung of such a small child but was necessary to save him too. Fortunately, it was a success and the foreign body was removed. Now the child is stable and condition is improving.
Lesson for all parents:-
“There should not be any small objects in the hands or within the reach of the child which he/she can put in the mouth”. Sometimes you have no clue what happened and the child gets into some serious trouble.
