No More Traffic Jams: Understanding and Managing Childhood Constipation
Constipation in children is no trivial matter, and it's becoming increasingly prevalent. Approximately 20 percent of my patients seek treatment for this issue. Several factors contribute to this alarming trend:
1. Early introduction of semi-solids during weaning.
2. Premature toilet training.
3. School-related stressors, including rushing to get ready and holding in stool due to inadequate facilities.
Constipation in children can lead to a host of problems, such as recurrent vomiting, abdominal pain, appetite loss, and even intestinal obstructions. It's essential not to underestimate its impact on a child's well-being. Treatment primarily involves disimpaction with oral medicine or enemas, followed by maintenance therapy. There's no need to rush the discontinuation of medications; let habits and intestines improve naturally.
To prevent constipation, encourage a regular toilet routine, prioritize early bedtime, change diapers frequently, and maintain consistency even during vacations and travel. Constipation is no fun, so let's take it seriously and ensure our children's digestive health.
